Plant a Tree, Watch it Grow in Google Earth

Babytree.org

It’s a really cool way to combine ecology with technology:

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) offers you the opportunity to buy a tree which will be planted in a rainforest in Sebangau National Forest in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. In return, they not only plant the tree, but give you a Google Earth KML file in return with the location coordinates of your tree. Theoretically, as Google continues to update with higher resolution satellite and aerial imagery, you should be able to watch the growth of your tree (and the others who donate trees) over the coming years. To get started, you simply go to the web site mybabytree.org. They have a very cute animation that will guide you through the process, and you can use Paypal to make your donation. You can see the location and list of trees purchased so far here . Borneo is another location, like the Amazon, where rain forests are disappearing due to logging at a freightening pace. I hope WWF will extend the concept to the rapidly declining rain forests in the Amazon.

FeedDemon and NewsGator are now free

NewsGator announced that they are making all their RSS readers free. I think that this an exciting news for everybody who loves reading blogs and other RSS feeds, like I do!

FeedDemon is by no comparison the best desktop RSS reader out there and Nick Bradbury announced that although FD is free now, they will not stop developing the product. I personally don’t use any desktop reader, but if you think that the desktop reader advantages are more important to you, then FeedDemon is the way to go. It is definitely one of the best crafted software titles on the Net.

The RSS reader I use, is the online version of NewsGator, which now offers all the features reserved for the paid editions in the past. For example there was a limit of one custom “Keyword Search” feed, now it’s gone! I prefer it to Google Reader, but they have to keep up with the smart new features Google are adding in their reader like shared feeds.

MyInfo anniversary

Today, MyInfo just turned eight! It’s been a long time, since the first release of MyInfo hit the market on October 29, 1999. The little app back there turned into a complete tool for organizing any kind of information with lots of hard-core fans today.
Those people are the reason why MyInfo survived many other similar products in the years and why it gets better and better with each new release. I want to thank to all of you for the continuing support and for all the praise, suggestions and questions that I get each day on my email.
Talking about this anniversary, let me tell you a little story. Back in 1999, when we first released MyInfo, it was not an instant success. We’ve got a number of downloads, but the sales were low (here is the moment to thank to our first customer, a guy who turned out to be a big visioner - thanks, Wil :) ). That doesn’t mean that there was no interest in MyInfo. Just in the opposite - many people were contacting us on the email with suggestions for little improvements. Well, when we released MyInfo 1.1 with these little (according to us) improvements, the orders started to pour in. With the next versions (1.5 and 1.7) things got even better and we were relieved - MyInfo survived and thrived since!
And this is a good thing. I am happy reading all those emails from people that depend on MyInfo for organizing their lives and businesses!
With each new release MyInfo got better and better and soon we had the recognition of the experts too: Software Industry Awards Foundation nominated us for the Best Business Application in 2003 and Jeremy Wagstaff wrote a column for us at Wall Street Journal Online.
With all that said, I have good news for you. MyInfo just got better. Version 4 is a huge step forward and as an appreciation for your continuing support, we will offer it first exclusively to our current customers. It will be a special, time-limited offer, so check your email tomorrow. You don’t want to miss it ;)

Improved Send to MyInfo for Firefox

Send to MyInfo is a handy plugin for Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox that speeds up collecting of information from the Web. However, the Firefox version has one significant limitation - it sends only plain text (no text formatting, no images).

Not anymore! We have just released a new version of Send To MyInfo for Firefox, which works exactly like the Internet Explorer plugin: preserving all text formatting and images.

The improved version was originally planned as a MyInfo 4 add-on only, however we have managed to make it work with both versions (3 & 4). This means that you can install it even if you are not a beta tester of MyInfo 4.

Firefox should automatically inform you that there is a new version of the add-on and offer you to update the version installed on your computer. If, for some reason, this fails, you can find the updated add-on in the MyInfo Plugins section on our web site.
